Meka - Giant Robot Anime - Origin and Curiosities

Do you know meka genre anime? Is there any historical basis for giant robots to emerge in Japan? How did the Mecha genre come about in Japan? In this article, we will answer these and other questions about giant robots.

For decades, the mecha or meka [メカ] genre has been popularized in Japan with famous works like Gundam and not to mention the old tokusatsu. For those who don't know, the mecha genre is anime, movies, manga or series with giant robots.

How did the Mecha genre come about in Japan?

Every year thousands of works with giant robots are released, and thousands of other works make reference to giant robots. How did this giant robot anime genre come about?

Meka - giant robot anime - origin and curiosities

There is no deep origin of giant robots in Japanese culture. Some believe that the armors of Samurai and the legends of Japanese monsters may have had a direct influence on the emergence of these giant robots.

Mecha are generally vehicles, controlled from a cockpit by a single pilot or a small team. The word originated from the English mechanism (mechanic).

Gundam is one of Japan's most popular giant robot anime. He is so popular that there is a life-size statue and giants on the artificial island of Odaiba in Tokyo in front of the Mall where there is a Gundam store.

Japan's first MANGA AND ANIME meka

Do you know how the first manga and anime that gave diva to the meka genre in Japan came about? It's a little uncertain to give credit, but historically, in the year 1940 there was a short manga named Denki Dako (Eletric Octopus) which involved mechanical octopuses.

The first mecha anime was released in 1963 with the name Tetsujin 28-GO, and like most anime, it was based on a manga from 1956. Another manga that originated the giant robots was Giant Robo. Mitsuteru Yokoyama was the author of both mangas and became known as the father of the genre.

Yokoyama says he was largely influenced by the Second World War and the bombing of Kobe. He also mentioned that he was greatly influenced by the Frankenstein monster and the famous Astro Boy.

It is believed that the Gundam and Evangelion series gave a big boost and popularized this genre. Tokusatsu such as Super Sentai and the famous Godzilla movies also served as a great influence on the popularization of giant robots.

Anime Mechas have been improved

The first anime where a giant robot appears was Tetsujin 28-GO, but until then it was piloted by remote control. It wasn't until 1972 that Mazinger Z appeared, a manga that was apparently the first to feature the control of a robot inside it.

Mecha is a fairly broad category with many subdivisions involving small, large, and humanoid or animal-looking robots.

Anime like Code Geass, Gurren Lagann and Aldnoah Zero were able to break the prejudice against the genre that some people had. Currently, we have Darling in the Franxx in the spotlight.

The best Meka anime of all time

Gundam is a series about giant robots (mecha), one of the biggest Japanese science fiction series. Gundam has a rather complex history to briefly describe. Gundam actually has its own universe and diverse backstories.

I don't even need to quote Gundam a lot, since there are so many different anime and because we already have an article talking about Gundam. The next anime I'll mention are my favorite anime and they are inside my TOP 10, even though I'm not a fan of the Meka genre.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

An original anime released by Sunrise in 2007 involving mecha, wars, and psychological thriller. The anime shows the world being dominated by an Empire and a super intelligent guy trying to destroy this empire using a special ability he received that allows him to order a person to do something (he needs to look into their eyes, and he can only do this once per person). The plot is very good and has one of the best endings in anime history.
